Over the 1960-62 period, Carlo Ciussi gradually transitioned from figurative to abstract art . The partnership with Giuseppe Santomaso had a notable impact on the development of his art expressed in informal terms. However, in the following Il Paese perduto (The Lost village) cycle in 1963 the black signs of informel art are replaced by geometric elements, in particular squares that alternate with circles. This cycle of works marked a crucial turning point in his artistic research and the following year he took part in the 1964 Biennal exhibiting five works.
