Work of great historic importance by Yasuo Sumi: it was displayed at the historic 9th Gutai Art Exhibition, 1960, Osaka, Takashimaya; displayed and published in the exhibition "Kaiga no Arashi show at Osaka National Museum of Art" in 1985, with catalog; displayed and published in the exhibition catalog "Action and Emotion, 50s Paintings, Informel, Gutai, Cobra", Osaka National Museum of Art, p. 85, September-November 1985. During the Golden years of the Gutai movement Yasuo Sumi realized very few works on such large canvases and it is estimated that the ones made in the early 1960s are no more than fifteen. The fact that this work was displayed in such important historic exhibitions makes it one of the most important within Sumi’s whole artistic production.

Work exhibited at Galerie Sander, Germany in 1992; it was also displayed in various exhibitions in Japan. Work of great significance within the production of Shozo Shimamoto for various reasons: 1) the year of execution, in 1991, is important as the few bottle crash Shimamoto realized in the early 1990s were executed in the same way as the very rare ones he made in the 50s / 60s post-cannon period: the glass bottles shattered against the stones cast their shards and slivers onto the canvas; 2)its high quality; 3) the numerous exhibitions it took part in, notedly the one held at the Sander Gallery in 1992.

Very rare work on canvas by Mukai dated 1960: the artist in a moment of madness in November 1965 burnt all the works in his studio (this is documented in the Ashiya Museum in Japan), thus, the ones from the 1960-65 period that were saved were really very few, so extremely rare and important as this one is.

Literature: "Shozo Shimamoto, recent works", from 10/05/18 to 30/06/18 at Galleria Dellupi Arte, Milano with label on the reverse, pp. 34, 35, 36, 37. Work displayed in the above exhibition as stated in the label on the reverse. Work belonging to an important performance by Shimamoto; here is an excerpt from an interview by Andrea Mardegan of the Shozo Shimamoto Association in which he asks the Master: “ One of your most important works in recent times is the monument to peace of Heiwa no Akashi a Shin Nishinomiya, the cement arena that you regenerate by casting bottles of color paint every year, on the condition that Japan does not enter war?” Shimamoto answers.: “It all started in 1986 when Bern Porter came to visit me. Bern Porter was a nuclear physicist that had participated in Project Manhattan during the Second World War, but who was shocked by the fact that a bomb was detonated over Hiroshima despite the emperor’s surrender… Bern Porter deeply regretted his contribution to the experiment, became a correspondence artist and began making pilgrimages around the world to ask for forgiveness. In my studio he cried, saying that to expiate his sins eight death sentences would not suffice. In that moment, I decided to promote world peace and shared my pacifist ideas with him. After learning of my activities, Bern Porter suggested me as a candidate for the Nobel Peace prize, which I did not win. I have, however, continued to promote peace and in 1999 gave light to the Heiwa no Akashi project”.
