Pisa 89

Code: 32929

Unframed

The monumentality of Haring's design—a caricature straightening the Leaning Tower of Pisa—is not to be underestimated. In 1989, he was invited to Pisa, where he painted his last public mural on the wall of the Church of Sant'Antonio Abate. It was titled Tuttomondo (All the World), and dedicated to universal peace—it's a bright and lively scene, full of his winsome characters dancing, hula-hooping, taking on animal forms, or donning angel wings. He died only a few months later of AIDS, but the mural stands proud to this day, and has become a popular tourist destination. This poster serves as an announcement of the work—but it's also an important marker of the artist's last inspired days.

Certificate of authenticity by Shozo Shimamoto Archive with archive no. 2082

Work of high quality and great significance within the production of Shozo Shimamoto for various reasons: the year of execution, 1990s, is important as the few bottle crash Shimamoto realized in the early 1990s were executed in the same way as the very rare ones he made in the 50s / 60s post-cannon period: the glass bottles shattered against the stones cast their shards and slivers onto the canvas.

Dedication on the reverse, Label of the Galleria Annunciata, Milano on the reverse. Important neorealist work from 1955 by Giuseppe Zigaina belonging to the historic and famous collection of 8x10 cm works by Cesare Zavattini to whom the idea of collecting paintings of this small format came to him in 1941, when he received from Raffaele Carrieri the sketch of a painting by Campigli of that measure. It was then that "the devil blew into his ear" prompting him to ask the most famous artists of the last century to create small works of that size for him. The idea allowed him to collect over 2,000 pieces by the major artists of the twentieth century.
